Draw Tip Tuesdays - How to Capture a Scene Fast

Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday! Want to get better at drawing people quickly and loosely? In this Draw Tip Tuesday, I’ll show you how I sketch a barista in just a few minutes using a water-soluble pencil and a simple waterbrush. No fancy tools needed. You will see how to simplify complex shapes into quick, confident lines, add light washes for depth and life, focus on movement and light instead of details, and leave things out while embracing the wonkiness. This is not about perfection, it is about capturing the energy of the moment. Whether you are sketching in a café or using a reference photo, you will see it works the same way. Just a few squiggly lines can tell a whole story. Assignment: Make a quick 5 to 10 minute sketch of a barista (or use the photo I used, link below). Work fast, leave out the details, and focus on shapes and movement. Pro tip: Simplify what you see into shapes and marks. The viewer’s eye will fill in the rest.
