Extensibility In our body, most of the cells lack the capacity to stretch or lengthen, if they attempt to do so they only damage or destroy them. Muscle cells contract, and in order for them to retain this ability, they must accordingly possess extensibility, or the capacity to lengthen. Your muscle cells can be stretched to about three times their contracted length without rupturing. This is important because, in a lot of coordinated movements, so-called antagonistic muscles operate such that one is lengthening while the other is contracting. Tonicity It is the ability to become hard. If a sudden pull or stretch occurs, the body responds by automatically increasing the muscle's tension, a reflex that helps guard against danger as well as help maintain balance.
