I used to hear this a lot at my old job when managers come out of the conference room from an interview and I would say how did it go.
They were shrugged and say they overqualified and they asked for too much money. I was used to say, well, that's money well invested, no? The management will go on to say overqualified job seekers get rejected due to the fact they might get bored in the position and eventually leave. What a one I really love is that it will say, hell, I'll be out of the job if I hire him or her.
None of this still never made sense to me when it comes to my way of thinking. So let's unpack this a bit. Every smart company or business is looking to hire a great talent. I get it.
When it comes to smaller businesses, they tend to have a mindset of hiring people with less experience and train them along the way but pay them peanuts. I have witnessed this across many departments where I used to work at. At times, the management is draining themselves just to micromanage a crew to get things done to the point. Some will say, I might as well do it myself.
Being overqualified is the thing in the past. I think now more than ever, companies should be welcoming these overqualified candidates with open arms and really investing to these people. Here's why. First off, just the fact that they're overqualified for the position.
But you do need people like this in order to stay in business, right? If possible, try to match or get closer to pay range. If you fall short, make sure you make it up with them with some perks such as a healthy work like balance, benefits, or remote work schedule. If done properly, you would get them on board.
You could actually create a new position of role for this person to take on depending what other skill sets they're overqualified. I mentioned them together. Who knows, this may cover between two to three workers to save you money while they make money. By them being overqualified also means they're going to be more productive.
Coming with great ideas that may be an eye opener to your business. So yes, you should hire an overqualified candidate. Ah, we're back to the micromanaging again, huh? Even overqualified for a job position also means they will need little guidance to what they need to do.
But that should be a good thing for management, no? This will free up some time for you to do other managerial stuff. A good manager knows when to take a step back and say, if you need me, I'll be over here. My job consists of deployment via emails or already know where to go every morning and every day.
On the other hand, my boss will like for me to wait for him to come in, reiterate my deployment. This is like reading my email twice, by the way, in as a waste of time. I will also leave my tutorial link, seven manager tips to master employee autonomy in a description below. Once again, I get it.
I know some of our management like to be all over their employees, but now in this day and age, they need to start changing their mindset. Another way to properly manage these overqualified workers is to have a good onboarding process in which I will also leave a link to my tutorial, which will have a certification course you can purchase in that tutorial regarding onboarding. Properly onboarding your new hire will ensure that they know the ins and outs of their position along with the vision, mission statement of the company along with healthcare benefits and so forth. Properly onboarding will give them a sense of inclusion.
They won't have them feeling abandoned after being hired. This will help keep the retention of these overqualified workers and be more in tune as to what needs to be done. As I had mentioned, it's money well invested when it comes to hiring an overqualified worker and if management is smart enough, they can calculate how many personal he can cover with this one person doing multiple tasks. Companies really need to be start paying with these people are worth and in return get more out of them.
People qualified workers are just like hiring a generalist, so who have expertise in more than one subject matter or fill the work. These generalists also go getters as well, but they must get paid the work. So if you do the math, would you rather low pay three people to do a task in a department? Now don't forget the company is paying out benefits for three different employees or have one overqualified worker to cover, to come in and cover these three employees duties and pay them the work.
Trust me, you will be saving more money, less headaches and a long haul. Many things will take some time to check my tutorial out, all the links to be in the description below.
