There's many ways to break this down but simply put knowledge workers or workers who main capital is not.
Their job is to think for 11 such knowledge workers are pharmacists, architects, engineers, scientists or designers. Now this is on the high end. For what about in a company or business setting? Well you would get a programmer in there also someone who is in inventory management, project management, facility operators and even into warehouse functions such as forklift operators.
Some say unlike manual laborers who are paid for performing physical tasks may be true but keep in mind manual laborer can be knowledge workers when it comes to streamlining a process or procedures. Number of knowledge workers has continued to grow as organizations move towards a collaborative workplace that gives more autonomy to their employees. So for all the upper management teams that are looking for more ways to be autonomous you need to start hiring people that are in this mindset or if you already have them at your place of business I will give you 8 ways to help knowledge workers be more productive. In order for your knowledge workers to be successful in their position and deliver valuable creativity and innovation at your organization you first need to make sure that they are 100% in line with your strategic business goals.
So in order to do that you will need to ensure streamline internal communication. You need to frequently communicate your company's vision and mission and also the ultimate business goal if you want your knowledge workers to strive towards achieving them. Knowledge workers will not perform well when they work in solo organizations. Unfortunately even in today's time majority of companies still don't have a clear strategy in place when it comes to sharing information across departments and teams.
Management and supervisors need to understand that knowledge workers need to be closely connected with the rest of the workplace as they might need insight and additional information from the colleagues in order to deliver valuable results you are seeking. I know certain cool workers will want to keep all that intel to themselves as a way of having that some type of job security but when it comes to knowledge workers they just need that intel for them to complete their end goal not to take your job position. Regardless of the roles and departments, silos in the workplace affect everyone. As I just mentioned prior that silos disable employees to collaborate successfully.
On the other side the collaboration of knowledge workers with the rest of the organization is the only way to get the most out of your knowledge workers. Knowledge workers are not the only ones participating in the implementation of new solutions. Best results happen when the workplace is connected so everyone could participate in the co-creation process by sharing their own feedback and ideas. Also keep in mind to enable knowledge workers to keep open and transparent communication about their projects and make it visible for everyone to check out.
Knowledge workers love to keep up on the latest trends in their field of work. You know the best practices and innovations even though it can be overwhelming type of management since they also have other tasks to handle. But try to set aside some time to sit down with the knowledge workers and go over their findings to see if it's the right fit at the company or business. Or better yet communicate to them what you're trying to develop at the workplace and see what they come up with.
Knowledge workers need to be up to date with the latest business updates and strategic decisions. The information that you send to your knowledge workers need to be very specific and 100% relevant to what they do. If you decide to scrap a project the knowledge worker we're in for in the days or weeks later can cause many headaches in the reward. Especially if you do it to them on many times it would make them less productive since they might not want to put too much time and energy into researching and you change directions again.
With the emergence of remote work and from the look of things is not going anywhere no time soon, mobile communication in the workplace became very important. Moreover many organizations are now switching to mobile first workplace communications. To ensure knowledge workers success, mobile first communication gives them access to information and other internal content that they may need. It's hard for management to let someone go off on their own and do their own thing.
Yes we still have some command and control approach companies still around. I will have two thumbnails at the end. You can check out those tutorials on it and how to make the change. You must have trust in these knowledge workers and had trusted this for them to come back with some innovative idea to make sure they will get applied to the company's vision and mission.
There's no need to micro manage these knowledge workers but they need their freedom and resources from you to do their job so they will always come back to you. Also you can easily detect when it isn't doing their job because you will see it in the finished product. The shift from blue collar jobs to knowledge-based position present a lot of new opportunities for people aiming to grow their talents and expand their ideas and creativity. Knowledge workers are greatly joy their job mobility and they can work in different time zones at home in an airport lounge, coffee shop, parks, anywhere.
Employers need to start recognizing them as an asset of the company who possess unique skills and talents rather than as ordinary employees who perform the same day in and day out duties. The nature of the knowledge work allows the workers to gain leadership skills since they often work as their own bosses and enjoy greater freedom to perform new tasks every day.
