So let's jump into this. With the COVID epidemic, many employees and their managers are finding themselves working out of the office and separating from each other for the first time. Fortunately, there are base steps and procedures, if you will, that will make managers can easily take to improve the engagement of productivity of remote employees.

First is important to fully understand the common challenges from distraction to lack of face-to-face supervision. Here are a few ways managers can support their remote workers with one, regular check-ins, two, multiple communication options, whether it be email, phone, or a Zoom call, and established norms for each. Number three, opportunities for social interactions, and four, ongoing encouragement and emotional support. For those who are less explored, these common challenges of remote work.

Employees and managers may often express concerns and lack of face-to-face interaction. Managers may have a concern that the employees may not be working as hard or efficiently, depending on their position. On the other hand, some employees struggle with their reduced access to their managerial communications or support. They may feel their managers are not in tune with their needs or aren't being supported enough and getting the job completed.

Remote workers who are new to this lifestyle are often shocked about the additional effort and time that it takes to obtain information from their co-workers or supervisors. A simple question can feel like a big hurdle to an employee worker from home. They may be used to walking over to their office or cubicle, ask the questions, get the answers and be done within five to ten minutes. One of the most complaints from remote workers is the loneliness.

Some people may start missing the social interaction. Watercooler talk employees may feel less belonging to the organization over longer periods of time, working remotely. Working into your children since you're working from home, why pay for a daycare or babysitter? Working from the couch or floor employers should ensure that the remote workers have a proper talk care and a workspace set up prior to them working from home.

Even though parenting responsibilities may pop up regardless, worker from home or not managers should expect these distractions or even greater for an unplanned work from home transition. So how can managers support remote employees? There are also inexpensive and quick things that a supervisor or manager can do to ease the burden of setting up their employees, home-based workspace and to ease their anxiety for failure. Remote managers can set up a daily call-ins to their remote employees.

This could be on one-on-one call via phone or video or they can do a team call and have the team clip up some Q&A. Before going in to make sure everyone is on the same page, also try to keep the same time frame for those meeting, you can even send out appointments to the team. Establishment Rules of Engagement When managers set expectations, remote work becomes more productive and satisfying. Just as I've mentioned before, let the team know what will be the best time to meet up and find a common ground so everyone that need to be there is there.

Some employees may be available in the mid-morning versus later on in the afternoon and vice versa. It is best to set up that rule of engagement as soon as possible. Encourage Remote Social Interaction So if the employees were still working in-house in formal conversation, non-work topics will be under way all day. So managers should encourage these types of interactions while working remotely.

The easiest way to establish some basic social interaction is to at least some time at the beginning of the team call. Just for a non-work chat, you can start off by saying, we're going to spend the first few minutes just catching up with each other. How was it weekend? That's simple.

If you could hold virtual office parties and care packages can be sent to the remote workers in advance, all of these options will help ease the anxiety and the feeling of isolation and start promoting a sense of belonging again. So for the takeaway, emotional intelligence tells us that employees look to their managers for guidance and cues when it comes to sudden changes in the workforce. So if the manager communicates stress and confusion themselves, this will trickle down to the employees which in turn will affect productivity. Creative leaders will need to acknowledge the stress and anxiety that employees may be feeling in difficult circumstances.

But providing confidence in their team by using phrases such as, we got this, we can handle this, let's look for ways to strengthen during these times. With these types of support, employees may look forward to taking on the challenge with purpose and more focus. Many things will take us some time out to check out this tutorial.
