In times of change and with a newly dispersed workforce we see new challenges for managers around employees autonomy in a workplace.
In fact since we made the shift to remote work management is raffer their brains on how not to lose visibility and control. Thus the death to micro-manage. How is it about a lot of people who will work and remotely is having the time of their lives? Work life balance, great productivity is all at all time high for some companies.
And to be fair I know there is a lot of people who prefer to be in an office who when I talk about these guys. As management worried about what role they will play in a remote world of work my question is why are they so worried go ahead and manage. Go ahead and do your managing thing. The truth is a lot of managers can't.
I've also mentioned this in another tutorial that when it comes to management it is mostly about control and not productivity. Yeah you would give the job done but was it productive? Some of you could relate to the fact that some managers will have you running all over the place just simply because they have the power to do so. I've seen it personally over the years.
This also let your manager look good in the eyes of his superior. From the reality it looks like chaos. Once again I'm here to help. As I have mentioned with the remote team management may perceive having lost some visibility and control.
At this point you might feel more inclined to grab the stand-wheel and make the mistake of hovering. I'm here to help. So you can keep the micro at bay so you can focus on being the manager your team really needs. Employee autonomy is the extent to which employees have control and discretion for how they conduct their days, their daily tasks.
It refers to our desire as people and workers to be self-directed and have a sense of agency over ourselves. A work, our environment. This doesn't mean to run a monk but a lot of workers don't need much guidance on getting a task done. Management may think it isn't so.
Management need to have trust in their team expertise, skills and decision-making. If not why did they get hired in the first place? Some modern employees hold the opportunity for growth and learning. People who want to become the best version of themselves and companies that let them do.
These are the companies that attract the best talent. You have to understand the angle of employee autonomy at work is for each member of your team to have the opportunity to learn and develop in their role. Adding to the person's success and the overall success of the team. First off lose the control mentality.
Management will play the same roles as they always did. Except these will be done virtually. Management can schedule team meetings follow-ups assigned tasks all the same. But now more than ever, management need to start over communicating with his and her team, making sure everyone is on the same page.
Also, making sure if any question need to be asked, your team chatted away. You can also follow up on the progress throughout the day. That wasn't hard, wasn't it? Management need to change their minds that are what work is.
Management need to change their minds that are what work is. It's a task that you do, not a place for it to be done at. Or does managers think that they see me in a building creating hours? I'm actually working a full eight hours, not the case.
So here I'm going to give you the seven employees autonomy dues. Guide employees at the necessary touch points. Trust their skills and capabilities. Communicate clear goals and what needs to be done.
Coach employees to come to their own discoveries by asking the right questions. Trust their decision for six days, time off, personal days and work hours. Let employees test and apply learnings and simply step back. Many things would take you some time out to check out my tutorial.
