Quantum Chemistry and Spectroscopy - Quantum Chemistry 6.7 - Microwave Spectroscopy Example

Short lecture demonstrating the calculation of a bond length from a microwave spectrum. The rigid rotor quantum mechanical model system and selection rules predict a microwave spectrum for diatomic molecules which consists of a set of evenly spaced spectral lines. The spacing of the lines depends on the rotational constant B, which depends on the bond length and the reduced mass of the two atoms. Given a rotational spectrum, we can determine the rotational constant B, and thus the bond length r of the molecule. Here we perform an example for carbon monoxide.
