Short lecture on rovibrational energy levels. The rotational and vibrational energy levels of diatomic molecules are modeled by the rigid rotor and harmonic oscillators systems, respectively. A rovibrational state is specified by a rotational quantum number J and vibrational quantum number n which determine the energy of the state. The separation of rovibrational energy levels is determined by the rotational constants and vibrational constants. Rotational constants depend on the bond length and reduced mass of the atoms. Vibrational constants depend on the spring constant and reduced mass of the atoms.
