Quantum Chemistry and Spectroscopy - Quantum Chemistry 5.6 - Diatomic Infrared Spectra

Short lecture on the infrared spectra of diatomic molecules. The harmonic oscillator is a quantum mechanical model system which can be used to model the vibrations of diatomic molecules. The solutions to the Schrodinger equation for the harmonic oscillator potential are a set of distinct wavefunctions and energy levels. These energy levels are evenly spaced with the spacing determined by the spring constant and reduced mass of the atoms. The selection rule for absorption and emission spectroscopy is that the vibrational quantum number must change by a magnitude of 1. Since all energy levels are evenly spaced, all transitions are of equal energy, leading to a spectrum of only one peak for the infrared spectrum of diatomic molecules.
