Short lecture on rotation operators in quantum mechanics. The rigid rotor is a quantum mechanical model system for the rotation of diatomic molecules. It is natural to express this system in terms of spherical polar coordinates (r, theta, and phi). To do this we need an expression for the Laplacian operator (del squared) in spherical coordinates. We also need operators for total angular momentum squared, and the z component of angular momentum. Once completed, the rigid rotor Hamiltonian operator and Schrodinger equation are both easily expressed in terms of the total angular momentum squared operator.
