Quantum Chemistry and Spectroscopy - Quantum Chemistry 5.1 - Harmonic Oscillator Model

Short lecture on the quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator. The harmonic oscillator is a quantum mechanical model system for the vibrations of diatomic molecules. The electronic potential energy surface of diatomic molecules can be approximated as a quadratic potential with a minimum at the equilibrium bond length. This is a good approximation near equilibrium, but breaks down the further the molecule deforms from the bond length. The stiffness of the parabola is determined by the spring constant k, which is determined from the second derivative of the potential energy function evaluated at the minimum energy bond length.
