Short lecture on the energies of the hydrogen molecule-ion. Using a 1s orbital centered at each hydrogen atom as a basis set, there are two states which give the energy versus interatomic distance. The lower energy state gives the familiar bound potential energy surface, with the minimum energy at the bond distance.
