Short lecture on the superposition principle in quantum mechanics. The superposition principle states the a general wavefunction can be expressed as a linear combination of the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian operator. In this example, the coefficients are chosen such that the probability of measuring the energy eigenvalues of basis functions 1, 2, and 5 are 50%, 20%, and 30%, respectively. We use these coefficients and energy eigenvalues to compute the expectation value (average value) of the energy of the system.
