Quantum Chemistry and Spectroscopy - Quantum Chemistry 4.18 - Correspondence Principle

Short lecture on the correspondence principle. The correspondence principle states that under certain limits quantum mechanics must produce predictions which are equivalent to those of classical mechanics. These limits include systems / particles with high energy, large mass, and/or large length. If we apply macroscopic values to these variables in the particle in a box, harmonic oscillator, or rigid rotor quantum mechanical model systems, we obtain energy levels which are extremely small and closely spaced. The density of states is so high that physical properties (energy, momentum, position, etc.) can change by very very small relative amounts, in agreement with the continuous nature of classical mechanics.
