Short lecture on the wavefunctions of the rigid rotor. The rigid rotor wavefunctions are the spherical harmonic functions, which are expressed in terms of the angular spherical polar coordinates (theta and phi), and two quantum numbers (J and m). Theta and phi range from 0 to 180 degrees and 0 to 360 degrees, respectively. J and m range from 0 to infinity and -J to +J, respectively. The spherical harmonics are composed of a normalization constant, the associated Legendre polynomials, and a complex exponential. The Legendre polynomials are polynomials of various order in cos(theta). The complex exponential depends on the quantum number m.
