Short lecture on the trajectory of the classical harmonic oscillator. The harmonic oscillator is a system where the particle experiences a linear restoring force towards a reference position. This force is equivalent to a quadratic potential energy function centered at the reference position. Classically, solving Newton's laws of motion for the particle leads to a trajectory which is oscillatory over time. The frequency of oscillation depends on the spring constant of the potential and the mass of the particle. The maximum displacement from the reference is the amplitude of the oscillation. Starting with an initial velocity of zero results in a trajectory which is defined by [ Acos(wt) ], where the w is the angular frequency.
