Short lecture on the rigid rotor energy levels. The rigid rotor is a quantum mechanical model system for the rotations of diatomic molecules. Solving this Schrodinger equation with zero potential energy for a fixed bond lengths leads to energy levels which depend linearly on a rotational constant B and quadratically on a non-negative integer quantum number J. The rotational constant depends inversely on the reduced mass of the atoms and inverse quadratically on the bond length of the molecule. The degeneracy increases with quantum number J, with the degeneracy of the level equal to [ 2J + 1 ].
