Short lecture on the energy of the classical harmonic oscillator. The harmonic oscillator is a system where the particle experiences a linear restoring force towards a reference position. This force is equivalent to a quadratic potential energy function centered at the reference position. In the previous video we showed that the solutions to Newton's equations of motions for this system result in a cosine oscillation over time with an angular frequency which depends on the spring constant and the mass of the particle. Here we show that the energy of the system is conserved as it interconverts between kinetic and potential energy, with the total energy depending on the spring constant and the square of the oscillation amplitude.
