Short lecture on normalization of the wavefunction. The wavefunctions for the particle in a box model system are the eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian operator, [ psi_n(x) = B sin(n pi x / L) ]. The coefficient B is the normalization constant, which is determined by ensuring that the probability that the particle is between zero and L is 100%. To do so, we set the integral of the wavefunction times its complex conjugate over all space equal to 1. This gives a normalization constant of sqrt(2 / L).
