Short lecture on 2nd order spectra in NMR. In situations where adjacent spin 1/2 nuclei in a magnetic field couple to one another, 1st order perturbation theory is not sufficiently accurate when the coupling constant is large, the spectrometer frequency is small, or the nuclei have similar chemical shifts. In this case, the linear variational method must be used to predict the energy levels and spectral peaks.
