Welcome to Week 5 Tutorial 3 of the course "Mathematics for Data Science I" by Profs. Neelesh Upadhye, Madhavan Mukund. Full Course: https://study.iitm.ac.in/ds/course_pages/BSMA1001.html Video Overview In this lecture, we demonstrate how to sketch a quadratic curve using two linear equations, l1 and l2, that approximate the parabola. By analyzing the data points, we identify the vertex at (6.25, 40.625) and use the quadratic equation _0.4x2+3x+25 to sketch its overall shape. The tutorial also compares how well this quadratic model fits the given points and linear approximations. Since the quadratic fit is found to be quite inaccurate, we also reflect on ways to improve curve fitting. Possible approaches include using more linear segments for a piecewise approximation, trying higher-degree or alternative functions, applying weighted fits, or adopting regression methods like smoothing splines. Ensuring data quality before fitting is another key step to improve accuracy.
