Welcome to Week 2 Lecture 21 of the course "Mathematics for Data Science I" by Profs. Neelesh Upadhye, Madhavan Mukund. Full Course: https://study.iitm.ac.in/ds/course_pages/BSMA1001.html Video Overview In this lecture, we apply the general form of a line equation to determine conditions for parallelism and perpendicularity. Given two lines in the form a1x + b1y + c1 = 0 and a2x + b2y + c2 = 0, we examine how to tell whether the lines are parallel or perpendicular. We derive the conditions a1b2 = a2b1 for parallel lines and a1a2 + b1b2 = 0 for perpendicular lines, connecting them back to the concept of slopes. This approach shows how the general form captures geometric properties without requiring conversion to slope intercept form. About IIT Madras' online Bachelor of Science programme IIT Madras offers four-year BS programmes that aim to provide quality education to all, irrespective of age, educational background, or location. The BS programme has multiple levels, which provide flexibility to students to exit at any of these levels. Depending on the courses completed and credits earned, the learner can receive a Foundation Certificate from IITM CODE (Centre for Outreach and Digital Education), Diploma(s) from IIT Madras, or BSc/BS Degrees from IIT Madras.
