In this screen cast we work with the Maxwell-Boltzmann equation. Key is that the kinetic energy (and the underlying molecular velocity for a given species) is only a function of temperature. Therefore, if we have solid and liquid water in equilibrium at the same temperature (i.e., at the normal melting point), the mean translational velocity of the water molecules in both phases will be the same. We will also find that the molecules around us are moving very fast... fortunately they do not weigh very much!
