Chad provides a comprehensive lesson on Self Inductance and Mutual Inductance. A changing current causes a changing magnetic field and a changing magnetic flux and induces an emf in a conducting loop that opposes the change in the current according to Faraday's Law and Lenz's Law. When this induced emf is experienced by the same conducting loop having the changing current, it is termed self inductance. The SI unit for inductance is the Henry and is equal to a volt-second per ampere. If a changing current in one conducting coil induces an emf in a second coil, this is termed mutual inductance. One application of mutual inductance occurs in transformers. Transformers are used in AC circuits to either 'step up' or 'step down' the potential difference. Ultimately, this is accomplished simply by adjusting the number of turns in the primary and secondary coils in a transformer.
