Presenter: Kelsey Ulrich-Verslycken Even the most competent language learners don't always want to speak in the target language. This phenomenon, referred to as "willingness to communicate," can determine whether and when learners voluntarily produce target language output. Willingness to communicate can be affected by learners’ emotions, self-perceptions of their linguistic ability, interest in the topic, the number and type of speakers involved, the setting, and additional factors. In this webinar, we will explore how willingness to communicate affects the complex connections between learner output, learner self-awareness and self-correction, teacher assessment, and opportunities to receive feedback from others. We will also consider practical strategies to increase willingness to communicate in TESOL settings.
