「Learn Japanese」 X + と同時に + Y as “Y at the same time as X” This grammar pattern is used to express that something, Y, holds true or takes place at the same time as something else, X, holds true or takes place. This grammar pattern can be used with X as all kinds of words, including verbs, nouns, verbal nouns, and adjectives; however, X must always be in one of the Plain-Form conjugations (e.g. Dictionary-Form, Negative-ない-Form, etc.). When used with な-adjectives, the respective conjugation of the phrasing である comes after the な-adjective and before と同時に. For nouns, the respective conjugation of である after the noun and before と同時に is optional. For verbal nouns, the verbal noun is simply followed by と同時に. *In some contextual usages, this grammar pattern more naturally translates to “as soon as, the moment.” Example(s): 彼は大学院生をしていると同時に、デビュー作の漫画も描いています。 Kare wa daigakuinsei o shite iru to douji ni, debut saku no manga mo egaite imasu. (He is simultaneously going to school as a graduate student and working on his debut manga series.) 銀行で強盗(である)と同時に火事が起こった。 Ginkou de goutou (de aru) to douji ni kaji ga okotta. (A fire broke out at the same time there was a robbery at the bank.) この映画は滑稽であると同時に知的です。 Kono eiga wa kokkei de aru to douji ni sateki desu. (This movie is simultaneously comical and intellectual.) コンビニのドアが開くと同時に、犬が出て来た。 Konbini no doa ga aku to douji ni, inu ga dete kita. (The moment the convenience store door opened, a dog came barging out.) ✧¸¸.•*¨*• •*¨*•.¸¸✧ Support Learning Japanese on Patreon!
