「Learn Japanese」 NOUN + なし + (の/で/だ) as “without NOUN” This grammar pattern is used to simply express “without NOUN.” It can be used to modify another noun, to modify a verb, or to complete a clause. When used to modify a noun, the NOUN is followed by the particle の. When used to modify a verb, the NOUN is followed by the particle で. And when used to complete a clause, the NOUN is followed by the respective conjugation of です. Example(s): 足首を捻挫しましたから、今日は運動なしだ。 Ashikubi o nenza shimashitakara, kyou wa undou nashi da. (I sprained my ankle, so I’ll go without exercise today.) 彼女はレシピなしで色々な料理が出来ます。 Kanojo wa recipe nashi de iro iro na ryouri ga dekimasu. (She can make all kinds of meals without having their recipes at-hand.) 電池なしの携帯は使えませんよ。 Denchi nashi no keitai wa tsukaemasenyo. (I can’t use a cell phone without batteries in it!) 今度は彼女なしで来て下さい。 Kondo wa kanojo nashi de kite kudasai.
