CLAUSE1 (Dictionary Form) + 前に + CLAUSE2 as “Before C1, C2” This grammar construct is used to convey that the contents of CLAUSE2 occur before the contents of CLAUSE1; in this pattern, CLAUSE1 is conjugated into the Dictionary Form regardless of what form CLAUSE2 is respectively conjugated into. Example(s): 友達と一緒にゲームをする前に、宿題をする必要がある。 Tomodachi to issho ni game o suru mae ni, shukudai o suru hitsuyou ga aru. (Before I play games with my friends, I need to do my homework.) ダウンタウンに行く前に食べましょうか? Downtown ni iku mae ni tabemashouka? (Shall we eat before we go downtown?) This grammar construct can also be used with NOUN + の前に in lieu of a CLAUSE with a predicate in Dictionary Form, in which NOUN denotes an activity or an event. Example(s): 授業の前に文法を復習するつもりです。 Jyugyou no mae ni bunpou o fukushuu suru tsumori desu. (Before class, I intend to review some grammar.) 会議の前に、発表を練習しました。 Kaigi no mae ni, happyou o renshuu shimashita. (Before the meeting, I practiced my presentation.) ✧¸¸.•*¨*• •*¨*•.¸¸✧ Support Learning Japanese on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/learningjapanese This video series is presented by becauseofdreams. http://becauseofdreams.com/ For the sub-domain dedicated to the Japanese grammar patterns covered in this video series and other aspects of learning the Japanese language and culture, visit http://learnjapanese.becauseofdreams.com All media presented in this video is created and owned by becauseofdreams or is used with complete permissions. ✧¸¸.•*¨*• •*¨*•.¸¸✧ Edit(s): *Please do leave a comment below if you notice any potential errors so I can include a notification about it!
