http://Parenttools.org has created a series of 6 videos designed to help frustrated parents with difficult teens. The information in the videos is applicable not only for parents dealing with difficult teens, but is an excellent resource for parents of children of all ages. In fact the sooner a parent starts using the techniques taught in these videos, the sooner they will see a positive impact with their children's behavior. This is the 5th of 5 sample clips from the 4th video in the series titled "Building Good Relationships & Rapport". Parents who have good communication usually have some basic rules or standards about communication. these parents follow these rules themselves and insist on the rules being followed in the family discussions. For example, on family has a rule that all communication be what they call the 3 C's. Calm, Considerate, and Cooperative. If someone starts communication differently from that, they are reminded of the 3 C's. If they don't correct the way they are communicating, they are sent to timeout until they are composed and able to discuss things, or problems, using the 3 C's. We recommend parents adopt the 3 C's or something similar in your home. If parents will use, insist, and enforce this type of communication, it will be come the norm, or standard of practice in the home. It is amazing how much communication in the home is modeled, which is why it is so important that parents are aware that they are setting the example. http://Parenttools.org is part of a non-profit organization that help parents learn how to be better parents.
