http://Parenttools.org has created a series of 6 videos designed to help frustrated parents with difficult teens. The information in the videos is applicable not only for difficult teens, but is an excellent resource for parents of children of all ages. In fact the sooner a parent starts using the techniques taught in these videos, the sooner they will see a positive impact with their children. This is the 3rd of 4 sample clips from the 1st video in the series titles "How to Motivate Your Teen". This clip talks about how parents are in a perfect position to create an environment that motivates positive behavior from children, but fail to take advantage of this position. You can motivate and create leverage with your teen by holding the keys to things that motivate them. This can be both things they strongly want or consequences they strongly want to avoid. Consequences are strong and necessary motivators. Getting fired, failing grades, going to jail, getting benched on your sports team all play an important part of motivation. Equally important is rewards and benefits. For teens this may include receiving physical possessions but more often is privileges or opportunities. This includes things like being able to be with friends, having a cell phone, watching TV, listening to music, having money to spend, playing video games, going out with their friends, having transportation, and use of a computer. Parents are in a perfect situation to create leverage with their teens since almost every possession, privilege or opportunity that teens have are either given, supplied or granted by their parents. Yet most parents, and especially those with defiant teens have very little if any leverage with their teens. Why? This is the key. Most parents have put their teens on what we call teenage pension. http://Parenttools.org is part of a non-profit organization that help parents learn how to be better parents.
