http://Parenttools.org has created a series of 6 videos designed to help frustrated parents with difficult teens. The information in the videos is applicable not only for parents dealing with difficult teens, but is an excellent resource for parents of children of all ages. In fact the sooner a parent starts using the techniques taught in these videos, the sooner they will see a positive impact with their children's behavior. This is the 1st of 4 sample clips from the 3rd video in the series titled "Getting Respect". Children tend to be responsive to parents that have established credibility, yet will ignore, challenge and continually test parents who have not developed credibility with them. Credibility is more of a struggle for parents today. It used to be that just being the parents would give some level of credibility, but not in today's culture. Gone are the days of "Father knows best." or "Children are to be seen and not heard." Furthermore, parents, for the most part, are no longer portrayed in positive light in movies, TV shows or other media. In fact, often they are portrayed as being not very smart, incompetent, unfair or even over reactive. Many children today seem to believe parents main role is to provide but not necessarily preside. These children want their parents to provide them with their needs and their wants but do not want their parents to preside over them or have any input on how their lives are lived. If you are able to properly preside in your home and have your children's cooperation and respect it is because you have been able to establish a level of credibility with your children. While this is quite easy with some children, as they seem to naturally respect and revere their parents, for many children credibility is something that is very difficult to earn or establish. This can even happen within the same family. For those children who are resistive to parental authority, establishing credibility becomes even more crucial. Credibility is necessary for any parent to be effective. http://Parenttools.org is part of a non-profit organization that help parents learn how to be better parents.
