In this episode of 4MFS, Kevin teaches us his go-to techniques for shooting athletic commercials - something that you would see for Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, etc. We’re creating a gritty street city look, focusing on hard lighting and how to achieve it outdoors at night. We’re also going to be shooting on anamorphic lenses and using some elements in production to enhance the visual interest of the frame. We’re shooting on a rooftop in downtown Los Angeles at night. While the location is not cheap, it pairs nicely with the anamorphic lenses we’re using to get nice, creamy bokeh and it does a lot of the production design for us. Shooting outdoors at a late hour presents logistical challenges in of itself, such as power for lighting. To solve that, we use small Honda 2000W generators for our lights and monitors. Since most of the lighting has to be hard, we stick up two LS 300DIIs with Fresnel 2x’s on combo stands to serve as backlights/rim lights. Because we need more light on the ground, we have an LS 600d Pro with an F10 Fresnel hitting the wetdown that we placed in order to give the scene its “city” feel and add visual interest. When we get in closer for singles, we add another LS 300d II bouncing into ultra bounce floppies since the backlights weren’t enough to key the two actors. The light was still hard enough to look motivated from the street lights, but also gave the actors eye lights. Kevin used his trusty RED Komodo with Atlas Orion anamorphic lenses, which allowed us to stop down all the way to F2 and retain details in the darker parts of the frame. Paired with Hollywood Blackmagic lens filters, the result was a very crisp image. Want more free lighting and cinematography tutorials?
