We’ve all wondered why we can’t seem to make the shots on our phones match high end cameras. While there are some technical limitations to phone cameras, they are constantly getting better and better. If you understand these technical differences and how to work around them, you can still get amazing footage with your phone. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we are going to show you everything you need to know in order to get cinematic footage with your phone. In this video, Matt from the A-Team shows us how to shoot a cinematic scene on an iphone. First, he makes sure the phone has everything it needs to get the most out of its camera. This means filmmaking apps and accessories that allow him to get the most control of the image. Then, he designs the scene around the limitations of the phone. This means using light and shadow in ways that the phone will be able to record. Next, he carefully adjusts the lights in order to keep them within the phone’s range of exposure. The main aspects addressed in this video are manual control, dynamic range, and depth. Manual control means being able to control each of the camera’s settings independently. Control is an important first step to getting cinematic images. Dynamic range refers to a camera’s ability to capture information between the brightest highlights and darkest shadows. Understanding your camera’s dynamic range will help you light in a way that creates the most contrast. Ultimately, there’s no excuse when it comes to good lighting. Even with the cheapest cameras you can still get great images if you know the limitations of your camera and work within them. In addition, investing more time and resources in making the camera you have better is almost more beneficial than buying a nicer camera system.
