Stay tuned to the end for a chance to win a prize! Lighting is used all the time in movies to help convey a character’s emotions. If they’re brightly lit, with warm colors, it can make us think they’re happy. If they’re dimly lit with cool colors, it can make us think they’re sad. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we’re going to be showing you how to change a character’s mood using only lighting. In this video, Matt from the A-Team shows us three different lighting setups that create completely different moods for our character. First, he picks a setting to put the character in. This will stay the same for all three setups. Second, he determines what light quality will suit the mood the best. Hard light will add energy to the scene while soft light will make the scene calmer. Lastly, he thinks about the color of his lighting and how that can further add to the mood of the shot. Do you want a warm look, a cold look, or something in between. The main aspects addressed in this video are light quality and light placement. Light quality refers to how soft or hard a light is. The quality and the color of light can work together to play a big part in showing the mood of the scene. Light placement refers to where the lights are in your setup. By using different light placements, you can use light and shadow to reveal different parts of the character. Ultimately, lighting is another tool you can use to help tell your story. You can use it to tell the time of day, or the location, or even the way a character is feeling. The next time you approach a project, think about how you can use your lighting to go above and beyond what the lighting in the scene calls for. Think about ways you can use hard or soft light, and warm and cool light, to give the audience a better understanding of what your characters are feeling.
