Start Learning Cinematography | Cinematic Lighting 101 - How to Light Romantic Scenes | 3 Cinematography Techniques

Stay tuned to the end for a chance to win a prize! In this episode of 4 Minute Film School, Valentina uses warm, motivated lighting to create a romantic atmosphere. With the help of practical string lights and a soft overhead lantern, she captures the love in the air, but uses camera movement to twist the narrative slightly. For most narrative dramas, however, how can lighting convey romance and intimacy? We are shooting the scene in a studio backlot at night, when there is nothing but cheap, string lights along a ten-foot wall. Inspired by films like The Theory of Everything, we saw those lights as an opportunity to play with beautiful bokeh, and to motivate them with other lights. We used an Aputure 300x with a lantern attachment to key the actors from the far side in the singles. We had an Aputure 600d Pro light up the shop window on the left of frame and Aputure 300dIIs for the ones on the right. We gelled each one of the daylight fixtures with full CTO to match the color temperature of all the other lights, including the wall sconces we used as practicals. For those, we had Aputure B7cs set to 2700K, to add a little more warmth to the scene. We shot with the Canon C70 and Rokinon Xeen prime lenses on steadicam to give the scene some romantic momentum. Valentina wanted to shoot telephoto to compress the depth, to give dimension to the shot, and allow the bokeh in the background to expand. She also tested the pearlescent filters for the shot, but decided against it because it caused unavoidable flaring as the camera was moving. Finally, she wanted the camera to shift to the other side of 180º line to accentuate a narrative shift - heart-breaking news which causes one of the women to slam her menu down and leave. In general, you want to make sure that the lighting is warm overall, that your main light is soft, and that your characters have a pleasant eyelight in their close-ups.
