Stay tuned to the end for a chance to win a prize! Interview lighting is one of the most important setups to master as a filmmaker. Whether your passion is documentaries or you shoot corporate interviews to pay the bills, being able to light amazing interviews is a valuable skill. Today on 4 Minute Film School we’re going to walk through the process of selecting a location and lighting an interview setup, both with high budget lighting and low budget lighting. In this video, Matt from the A-Team picks a location for an interview setup and walks through how he determines the lighting for the setup. First, he looks for an angle that makes use of the space the interview is being shot in. This means looking for leading lines, background depth, and production design. Second, he places the subject and the camera in the set. Here he takes into consideration framing composition and camera settings. Lastly, he brings in his own lights to shape the look of the shot. This can include replacing or adding to the existing light in the location. The main aspects addressed in this video are background depth, light placement, and light quality. Background depth refers to the perceived size of the space you’re shooting in. This can be enhanced through depth of field, physical space, and lighting separation. Light placement refers to where the lights are placed in the setup. There are some light placements that serve as a good starting point to build your setup off of. Light quality refers to the hardness or softness of the light sources. The light quality you use can have an affect on the quality of the lighting overall. At the end of the day, interviews can and will be different for every project. The topics, subjects, and locations can strongly influence the look of the setup and the way you light it. However, there are a few go-to techniques that will make your interviews look great no matter what the situation is. Remember that the best filmmakers know how to get great images as quickly as possible, and having a few tricks in your back pocket will go a long way on your next shoot.
