Keeping the camera or the lights from showing up in the reflection often requires creative solutions. This is especially true for glasses, as you’re going to need to get close to them in order to see the subject well. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we’re going to shoot a commercial for a pair of sunglasses, and along the way show you three techniques for lighting for reflections. In this video, Valentina from the A-Team will walk you through how she shoots a sunglasses commercial with three techniques for shooting with reflections. First, she determines what look she wants for the video. Then, she uses a combination of natural light, artificial light, and bounce to illuminate three shots within the same visual style. Lastly, she uses various techniques to hide the light and the camera from showing up in the sunglasses. The main concepts mentioned in this video are wearing black, disguising lights, and hiding behind objects. Wearing black refers to the camera operator; wearing black will keep light from reflecting off of them and showing up in the reflective surface. Disguising lights means making an artificial light look like it’s an natural light source - like a window. Hiding behind objects refers to using different objects or materials to keep the camera from seeing you in the reflection. Ultimately, shooting with reflections is all about light and shadow. The more light you have in front of the reflection -- the more that’s going to show up in camera! Just make sure to look closely at the reflective surface in-frame, as you’re framing up the shot. It can be easy to miss a camera reflection. Remember, there’s no right way to shoot or light reflective surfaces, so experiment until you find a solution that works for you!
