The stylistic nature of music videos allows for more creative expression than narrative films or commercials. While you want each video you shoot to be unique and represent the style of the song, it can be helpful to have some go-to lighting setups to make working on set faster. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we’re going to show you three setups for cinematic music videos, and how you can create each one with just one light. In this video, Matt from the A-Team shows how to use one light to create three distinct music video looks that you can use on your next project. First, he decides what he wants the feeling of the video to be. This can influence the look of the visuals. Next, he selects a light to use in the setup. While many lighting tools can be used for various situations, each lighting setup has one light that’s the best one for the job. Lastly, he uses light modifiers to adjust or control the light to better suit the needs of the setup. The main aspects addressed in this video are practical lights, cycs, and light modifiers. Practical lights are any lights that show up in the frame. They can add a lot of depth and interest to a shot, but you want to make sure it fits in your scene. Cycs, or cycloramas, are large colored backdrops you see in studios. You can fake the look of a cyc wall if you’re intentional about the lighting. Light modifiers can be anything that’s used to adjust the brightness or quality of a light source. Using them in your setup can add an extra layer of quality to the lighting. At the end of the day, music videos can be anything you want them to be. There are no wrong choices when it comes to picking the style for your video. Just make sure that it accurately depicts what the director or the artist intended for their song. It’s fine to take influences from existing videos, but make sure that you make it unique to you and the song you’re shooting for.
