Strong Electrolytes vs Weak Electrolytes vs Nonelectrolytes Chad provides an introduction to Solutions in this lesson defining them in terms of their components: the solvent and solutes. Electrolytes are then defined and it is shown how they can be classified as strong electrolytes which dissociate into ions completely, weak electrolytes which dissociate into ions partially, and nonelectrolytes which do not dissociate into ions to any appreciable extent. The strong electrolytes include strong acids, strong bases, and soluble ionic compounds. The weak electrolytes include weak acids and weak bases. Molecular compounds that are not acids or bases are the most common examples of nonelectrolytes. Solutions and Solubility Finally, the lesson is concluded with the presentation of the Solubility Rules for ionic compounds in water with numerous examples classified as either 'soluble' or 'insoluble.'
