Chad gives a more thorough treatment of ionic bonding in this lesson. The lesson begins with a contrast of ionic bonding and covalent bonding including the defining of both nonpolar covalent and polar covalent bonding. While knowing that ionic bonding generally occurs between a metal and a nonmetal while covalent bonding generally occurs between two nonmetals is helpful, it is shown that characterizing the type of bonding based upon the difference in electronegativity is more reliable. Generally, a difference in electronegativity greater than 1.7 results in ionic bonding, while a difference less than 1.7 results in covalent bonding. Further, a difference in electronegativity less than 0.5 is termed nonpolar covalent (or pure covalent) bonding while a difference between 0.5 and 1.7 is termed polar covalent bonding. The lesson is concluded with a discussion of lattice energy. Its technical definition is provided as well as its relation to the strength of ionic bonding. Finally, the lattice energy trend is provided showing that the magnitude of the lattice energy is dependent upon the magnitude of the charges of the ions (greater charges result in higher lattice energy) and the size of the ions (smaller-sized ions result in higher lattice energy).
