Matter This is the first lesson in a General Chemistry complete course (General Chemistry 1 and General Chemistry 2). If you are looking to supplement your general chemistry class or if you are looking for online chemistry videos to help with your AP Chemistry studies, we are here to help. The course is broken up into 21 chapters with a total of 96 general chemistry lessons covering every subject taught in a typical university general chemistry course. The first lesson begins with Matter. What is matter? Chad introduces the topic of Chemistry with a discussion of what matter is, how we classify it including the chemical and physical properties of matter, and how we characterize its properties. In this lesson, you'll learn the atomic nature of matter and the basic characteristics of the three states of matter (i.e. phases of matter). You'll learn the difference between elements and compounds in chemistry which is ultimately based upon whether a substance is made up of just one type of atom or more than one type of atom. You'll also learn the difference between a pure substance and a mixture, and the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. You'll learn the difference between chemical and physical changes and chemical and physical properties. Finally, you'll learn the difference between intensive and extensive properties of matter which ultimately comes down to whether a property changes with a change in the size of the sample.
