Naming Binary Acids and Oxyacids Chad covers the IUPAC rules for naming Binary Acids and naming Oxyacids in this lesson and provides numerous examples and naming acids practice problems for each. He begins with a common binary acid students are likely to be familiar with: HCl, hydrochloric acid, and then demonstrates that this name can be used as the pattern for naming binary acids in general. Chad then covers naming acids with oxygen, i.e. naming oxyacids (a.k.a. naming oxoacids) along with naming the corresponding oxoanions. The names for the four oxyacids of chlorine are given: HClO = hypochlorous acid HClO2 = chlorous acid HClO3 = chloric acid HClO4 = perchloric acid Chad then demonstrates how these can be used as the pattern for naming the oxyacids of bromine and iodine as well.
