Chad provides an introduction to oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions including the definitions of oxidation and reduction and common mnemonics for remembering them (OIL RIG and LEO GER). He then provides a set of rules describing how to determine oxidation states and works several examples. He then shows how to use oxidation states to determine which species is oxidized and which is reduced in a redox reaction. He then covers single replacement reactions and shows how to use the activity series to determine when a single replacement reaction will be spontaneous.
