Chad's High School Chemistry Videos - 16.2 Naming Alkanes | High School Chemistry

Chad provides a lesson on the IUPAC rules for how to name simple alkanes. Chad explains how to identify and number the longest continuous carbon chain, i.e. the parent chain. The numerical prefixes for up to 10 carbons are provided (meth, eth, prop, but, pent, hex, hept, oct, non, dec) and it is explained to use the -ane suffix when naming the parent chain and the -yl suffix when naming a substituent coming off of the parent chain. Finally, it is explained that in a proper IUPAC name for an alkane the substituents are named first and in alphabetical order followed by the parent chain, and a couple of examples are worked out.
