Smooth muscle tissue anatomy review. In this video, I review the key concepts of smooth muscle tissue. This video covers smooth muscle location (with included mnemonic to help you remember). It also covers the basics of the smooth muscle cell's structure, smooth muscle layers (longitudinal, circular, and oblique), smooth muscle contraction, single-unit smooth muscle vs multi-unit smooth muscle, and more. QUIZ: https://www.registerednursern.com/smooth-muscle-quiz-anatomy/ Smooth muscle cells develop into a fusiform shape. They do not contain myofibrils or sarcomeres, but they do utilize thin (actin) and thick (mysoin) filaments to contract via a sliding filament mechanism. Because smooth muscle lacks myofibrils and sarcomeres, it lacks the striated (striped) appearance that characterizes skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue. Smooth muscle cells also contain intermediate filaments that connect to dense bodies. During smooth muscle contraction, myosin heads rise up and attach to thin (actin) filaments, pulling them forward. This causes the dense bodies to be pulled, which also pulls on the network of intermediate filaments (consisting of desmin and vimentin), causing contraction. Smooth muscle develops in layers in some organs. The common layers include longitudinal and circular, but the stomach also has a third layer: an oblique layers.
