Elevation vs depression: anatomy body movement terms. In anatomy, elevation refers to the upward, or superior movement of a body structure. Depression refers to the downward, or inferior, movement of a body structure. These terms are commonly used to describe motion of the mandible and scapulae (shoulder blades). For example, during elevation, the mandible moves upward. During depression, the mandible moves downward.
