Elevation vs depression: anatomy body movement terms. In anatomy, elevation refers to the upward, or superior movement of a body structure. Depression refers to the downward, or inferior, movement of a body structure. These terms are commonly used to describe motion of the mandible and scapulae (shoulder blades).
