Protrusion, retrusion, and excursion are terms used in anatomy to describe body movements going anteriorly (forward), posteriorly (backward), or side-to-side. This is most commonly used to describe the lips, tongue, or mandible. Retrusion refers to movement of a body part going posteriorly, or backward, as it returns to its normal position. Excursion is a movement of mandible going from one side to another. When the mandible deviates from the body's midline to the left or right, lateral excursion occurs. When the mandible moves back toward the body's midline, medial excursion occurs.
