Project Management Course - Beginner to Project Manager Managing Human Resources in Project Planning | Key Steps for Project Managers In project management, success is not just about budget or financial resources—it heavily depends on people. In this lesson, we focused on the importance of human and non-financial resources, and how critical it is to plan them properly. We broke the process into four key steps: defining the required resources, estimating the time needed, validating availability, and assigning clear roles and responsibilities. Using your Work Breakdown Structure as a starting point, you identify both internal and external expertise required to complete project activities effectively. A major takeaway is not to overlook management effort. Even decision-makers and approvers need time allocated in the plan—otherwise, delays in approvals can affect the entire project timeline. We also covered the importance of realistic time estimation, including optimism bias and the use of buffers to avoid under planning. In the next lesson, we’ll go deeper into resource allocation and scheduling challenges when working with real people who have competing priorities and limited availability.
