This is an extremely common question amongst interview panels. Be careful how you answer this one though. I have been on interview panels where people say, ‘I don’t know, I’ll see what happens.’ This is not a very good response to this question and displays a lack of ambition and drive. I have also been on interview panels where people have given responses such as: “I want to be sat in your seat doing your job.” Whilst I don’t disbelieve them I feel that this type of response displays arrogance rather than confidence. Try to structure your answer in a way that shows you are positive about the future but not overconfident. A good answer to use might be along the following lines: “I believe I am the right person for this job. If successful I would like to further develop my skills and knowledge by initially learning all I can about the role and the organisation. It is important for me to become competent in the role and also be respected by my peers and manager. I would eventually like to enrol on an educational programme in order to develop my skills and work towards a higher position within the company, if the opportunity arises. Above all I will be looking to have extensively developed both personally and professionally during that 5 year period.”
