The center of the Milky Way is shrouded in gas and dust which blocks our view in visible light. Infrared, x-ray, gamma-ray, and radio light all can pass through these obstacles giving us an excellent view. However, it’s very far, and the last few miles distort our view. The Earth’s atmosphere smears the image. Adaptive optics can fix that by quickly changing the shape of the mirrors right before the detector (among other methods).
